A Moorish history day. Went to Silves the old Moorish capital of the area again. This time to visit the castle and to see the town. Silves is probably our favourite inland town.Attractive narrow streets and little shops, and full of real Portuguese locals going about their business. There are tourists of course, but they are not intrusive in the way the beer-swilling, gut-buster-English-breakfast-eating ones are in the coastal resorts like Albufeira.
Coffee in the lovely old square just outside the walls of the Moorish castle. The cafe there is now run by a friendly young couple who have excellent English. Last year it was run by a really grumpy elderly couple who have either passed on or passed it on.
Walked round the castle ramparts and admired the considerable progress they have made with restoring the gardens inside the walls. You can still not get in to see the extraordinay water reservoir built by the Moors, but can peer through a glass door and get some idea of the scale of the place.
Intended to have lunch at the Kafe Ingles, but it was closed, so ended up at a friendly little restaurant down on the river front where they have live Fado every Thursday evening Made a note to go back for that.
Back to car and saw storks perching on a (tower) crane. Wondered what they do when it working.
Back to riverside car park where there are always a lot of North European campers parked. Amused to see a woman with very large behind investigating the luggage compartment in the side of one with just her behind sticking out. Shades of the illustration in the Winnie the Pooh books where he gets stuck trying to get out of Rabbit's house after having too much elevenses!
Two hours walk along Levada before back for shopping at Continente. Then back home with Nora and Charley who were to do the dinner while we went off to Faro to collect Harald and Siss.el
