Friday, 20th February. The memorial service.

Day started badly with the plumbing system in S and B's house backfiringSent our visitors off to Cape St Vincent as we needed to do some housework and wash the bedclothes and towels. We were also going to a memorial service for John Ross who lived here for forty years and who helped a lot of the Brits who moved here and was therefore fondly remembered. Beautiful memorial service at the burial ground on top a hill above Messines rounded off with reveille and the last post. (John was a retired military doctor...part the generation of ex-servicemen who came back to gloomy and run down Britain after the war and decided to flee to warmer climates) followed by VERY BOOZY wake afterwards at Bruce and Jennifer's house. Got to talk to a lot of old friends and made some new ones. Ended up with a possible offer to take over John's house but need to wait and see how real or realistic the offer is as it was sort of made after quite a few drinks! Would be very interesting though if we could afford it!
