Chilly night gave way to beautiful sunny morning, so we got off to Paderne and got in a good hour and a half’s walking up the hill to the windmill and back again before lunch. Strengthened ourselves for the walk with coffee and patel de nata at the local bakers before we set off. Beautiful walking weather, warm sunshine, almond blossom and spring flowers just starting, but very wet everywhere as they have had the wettest coldest winter in living memory (however long that i!) in the Algarve. Phone call from Nora to say she and Charley would not be able to come next week, but managed to persuade them to change their plans, so they are coming after all! Whoopee!
Lunch ( the day’s menu) in the cafĂ© of the local sports stadium ( estadio esportiva sounds much more poetic!) with all the local blokes, all busy chatting and joking incomprehensibly ( to us) and enjoying an incredibly cheap but good lunch. We both had boiled cod with chick peas and vegetables, a glass of wine and coffee and it all came to 108 Norwegian kroner ( or about ten pounds).

The cod we ate actually comes dried from Norway. Spoke to a very friendly woman in wine shop who was giving us a recipe she uses for preparing Norwegian dried cod and who said she has never tasted fresh cod and wondered what it was like!
