Real Saturday report

Woke to rain again, but at least the gas man came (and luckily without the dire results of Flanders and Swan's gasman), so hot water was restored by the time we got home. Luckily the weather cheered up and the sun came, so we decided to go to Tavira (beautiful old town on the coast with Roman bridge, almost in Spain. Sunshine good for our mood, and as we passed a number of Portuguese grannies on our way through the local village dressed in standard Portuguese grannie outfit of floral pinny with man's jacket on top and rather masculine hat rather like ones you see in pictures of Incas, we wondered whether we should wave and smile or pretend we had not seen them. Made note to find out the Portuguese for "Should we wave or smile or ignore you?". Potential for new type of phrase book called " Getting on with the locals"?
Got to Tavira about midday (nowhere is very far away in the Algarve). They have obviously made a big effort to smarten the place up. Last year it was a really attractive though very down-at-heel old fishing village, now it is really nice.
Before lunch we wandered round the local indoor market, which had a weekend fair offering local cakes, drinks and handicrafts. Much enjoyed the local ladies selling their things.
Fantastic lunch in the local pousada which is in a converted convent. Beautiful old buildings and wonderful food served by a waiter who was doing his absolute best with slightly shaky English.
Have picked up some new bits of Portuguese, today including "pele do inferno" which according to the dictionary should mean something like "free for all of hell" but which in fact seems to mean "picnic site" or "picnic place"! Also passed through a place called Poco Largo which we think should be translated as " a bit slow", as in " he's a bit slow".

Got back home to discover Nin has lost a set of the house keys.
